Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Song sheet calling for return of McClellan, with a handcolored print of a military unit on top. Yearns for "Little Mac, the people's pride." Printed some time after McClellan's dismissal from command of the army. The song was written by Septimus Winner, and this print was published and illustrated by Charles Magnus.

Septimus Winner was a prominent songwriter.
