Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked House Executive Document, No. 61, 36th Congress, 2nd Session. Buchanan transmits to Congress correspondence concerning Fort Sumter. Printings of seven letters, including ones by or to Jefferson Davis, John Slidell, Colonel Isaac W. Hayne, Secretary of War ad interim Joseph Holt, and Francis W. Pickens among others.
