Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Acting Rear Admiral Porter as commander of the Mississippi Squadron to Captain Walke as commander of the USS "Carondolet." Says he is sending coal down the river. Orders that army transport cannot have any of it. Says his calculations on the amount to send are based off navy needs alone and none can be loaned to the army.
