Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Battle of Lake Champlain-McDonough's Victory" dated 1866. Depicts Thomas McDonough's victory during the Battle of Lake Champlain. The naval battle ensued on September 11, 1814, between American and British forces. Engraved after a painting by Alonzo Chappel. Original painting in possession of the publisher at time of engraving. Engraver unkown.
