At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "The Face Upon the Floor," issued by the Central City Opera House Association, dated July 22, 1978. Print of the titled poem by H. Antoine D'Arcy.

This original poem, "The Face upon the Barroom Floor" was written by John Henry Titus in 1872. D'Arcy adapted a later version in 1887 to reflect an actual occurrence in a bar room.

Central City Opera House commissioned a play based on D'Arcy's poem and a painting in Face Bar at Teller House in Denver, CO in 1978.
