At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document dated January 26, 1877. The document bears the seal of the state of Florida. It declares that Robert Bullock Robert B. Hilton, Wilkinson Call, and James E Yonge were "duly determined, declared, and certified" to cast the electoral votes for the state of Florida in the 1876 presidential election. It also states that Charles H. Pearce, Frederick C. Humphries, William H. Holden, and Thomas W. Long were respondents.
