At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document dated January 27, 1877. The document bears the seal of the state of Florida. It declares that Charles H. Pearce, Frederick C. Humphries, William H. Holden, and Thomas W. Long were not "elected appointed or entitled" to be electors. It then states that Robert Bullock, Robert B. Hilton, Wilkinson Call, and James E. Yonge were entitled to cast the electoral votes for the state of Florida in the 1876 presidential election.
