Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Lest They Perish," pertaining to a campaign organized by American Committee for Relief in the Near East. The organization was meant to raise $30 million for refugees displaced by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Image depicts a woman with her baby wrapped to her back surrounded by rubble.

Near East Foundation, formerly American Committee Relief in the Near East, was founded following the removal of Armenians from parts of the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
