Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reprints "An act to incorporate the subscribers of the Bank of the United States." References the establishment of the National Bank. Other news includes congressional news, local news, ship arrivals, postings, and advertisements. Handwritten note in pen in upper right hand corner reads "Bank Act".

The Columbian Centinel & Massachusetts Federalist was printed from Oct. 5, 1799 (Vol. 32, no. 10) to Sept. 1, 1804 (v. 42, no. 2). Continues as the Columbian Centinel from June 16, 1790 (Vol. 13, no. 27) to Oct 2, 1799 (v. 32, no. 9). Continued by the Columbian Centinel from Sept 5, 1804 (Vol. 42, no. 3) to May 23, 1840 (v. 77, no. 6166).
