At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Sinking of the Alabama" dated 1897. Depicts the sinking of the CSS Alabama. Surviving confederate sailors swim towards an awaiting rescue vessel. Engraved from a painting by Warren Sheppard. Engraving possibly from the book, "The People's Standard History of the United States."
