Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The enclosed has been written in consequense of your letter to me of the 18th and if the promise I asked and obtained is [illegible] performed it contains a candid statement of what is necessary to liberate Mr. Low and carry him to Baltimore where I believe he wishes very much to be.
