At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Richardson Stuart, authorizing payment of those on the muster list. Also signed by John Fitzgerald, Washington's former aide-de-camp, and by Colonel George Gilpin. Lists the names of workers in the Potomac Company, founded by George Washington to construct canals along the Potomac River.

In 1784, both Virginia and Maryland agreed to support canal construction undertaken by the Potomac Company.
