Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly a leaf from Sherman's memoirs. Text is in pencil, signature, place, and date are in ink. "But Sherman pressed his attack to within pistol shot and advanced his left Division under Gen. M.L. Smith so as to cut off the Rebels from the Railroad bridge towards Chickamauga. The main object was completely gained by leading Bragg to weaken his center to support his Right."

the assaulting force advanced in a deployed line. preceeded by Stray Skirmishers who carried the Extreme End of the Rebel Work. but these took advantage of the Shape of ground. and made a Strong Point on the very crest of the Ridge from which they could not be dislodged but Sherman pressed his attack to within pistol shot and advanced his left Division under Gen M.L. Smith so as to cut off the Rebels from the Rail-road bridge towards Chickamauga - The main object was completely gained by leading Bragg to weaken his center to support his Right,
