Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Speeches by Grant pertain to a variety of subjects such as :The extracts chosen vary in subject. Some of the topics included are acceptance of the Republican nomination, feelings toward enslaved people being aided by the military, Black troops, defeat and surrender of General Lee, reconstruction, General Sheridan's and Secretary Stanton's removals, and military control of Western steamboat traffic.
