Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informing him that he has been appointed by the town of Easton "to Be a Soldier." This means "to Be Ready at a minets warning to march agreabell to alate act of this state: to any place wither this or the neighboring states of America to which you shall be ordered By the general Court of this State for the Defence there of." Pratt and Haywad both sign as wintnesses, and list their company's and ranks as lieutenants.
