Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists costs associated with regiment led by General William Gansell and General Thomas Gage, accumulated during a 94 day period between December 25, 1764 and March 28, 1765. Lists all members of the regiment, including a chaplain and servants, and notes allowances to widows and "to the Colonel for Cloathing lost by Deserters." Mentions an "Independent Company on Foot" led by Lieutenant Colonal Matthew Pierson, and two more companies commanded by Captain Francis McMillan and Captain Archibald Blane.
