Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Statement, mostly for candles, but also for paper products. Candles are for a lodge, most likely Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the United States, though it is not named. Rivera belonged to Touro Synagogue. Thomas Vernon, another Rhode Island merchant, is also involved in the account.

Jacob Rodriguez Rivera was a wealthy Jewish merchant and candlemaker.
