Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Revolutionary War era newspaper: Pennsylvania Journal. 5 and 19 April 1775 issues contain fugitive slave ads. Issue number 1698 is missing. March 8, 1775 contains African Slavery In America written by Thomas Paine in 1774.
