Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain John Buyers is granted a leave of absence to attend to urgent private business. A second note states that due to lack of transportation on the date of 27 February, 1863, the leave of absence will take into affect on March 4, 1863. The document is cross written and indicates that the paper was also used as some type of receipt.
