Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

President Grant's Commissioner of Indian Affairs writes to General Hazen, Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Southern Agency, regarding claims of Creek Indian refugees and related expenses. Written on stationary of the Department of the Interior's Office of Indian Affairs.

Ely Parker was a Seneca Indian, born on a reservation, served as an aide to General Grant during Civil War and the later became the first Native American to be Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Parker attempted but failed to reform the Office under Grant.
