At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

...[T]he forfeiture of the Brig Betsey and a Cask of Spirits...I, the said Secretary of the Treasury, have maturely considered the Said Statement of facts and petition and it doth appear to my Satisfaction that there was no intention of fraud or wilful negligence in the Said Marshal Jenkins. Now therefore know ye that I...in consideration of the premisses [sic] and by virtue of the power and authority to me given by the said last mentioned statute, do I decide to remit to the said Marshall Jenkins...all the right, claim and demand of the United States, and of all others whomsoever, in the said forfeiture...
