Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In Samuel Shaw's hand, and signed by him for Knox. Certificate verifying Jeremiah Freeman's service in the Continental Army as a Captain Lieutenant and that he has yet to receive "from any state whatever, the provision of pay, clothing, or allowance for depreciation of pay, granted by the respective states to officers of equal rank." Written at a Park of Artillery.
