Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists quantities of ordnance intended for the siege of Yorktown. Frothingham was a Deputy and Principal Field Commissary of Military Stores in Knox's artillery train. Notes appear on the list that associate the items with instructions in a letter created the same day. The notes are in the same hand as the unidentified author of that letter (see GLC02437.01237).
