Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Provision Return for one Man Drafted from the Invalid Regt. Capt. Rileys Company now employed in the ordinance Dept. for four Days is four Rations." Directed to Commissary Forsyth, possibly James Forsyth, Commissary at West Point. Return is signed by Banks. Note on verso, written and signed by John Banks, discusses provisions for contractors working at West Point.
