Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Charles Thomson as Secretary of Congress. Copy of a resolution allowing General Henry Knox to have the "pay of a major general in a separate department, during his command at West Point ... " Intended for presentation to Congress on October 31st. Written in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp.
