At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Caleb Swan for John Pierce, Paymaster General, 17 June 1788 in the Pay Office at New York (front cover). Signed 19 June 1788 by Joseph Howell, [Junior] Assistant Commissary, in the Office of Army Accounts at New York (page 13). Includes details of John Crane's account with the United States from 1776-1779. Pertains to recruiting accounts.

Howell was auditor of accounts of the War Department until the adoption of the Federal Constitution, when he was appointed Paymaster General of the Army. He held this office until his death. Howell was also secretary of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati 1791-1793. Paymaster-General John Pierce died in August 1788.
