Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses his invitation to join the Society of the Cincinnati that he received after the late War. Says in 1784 he was one of the French officers admitted into the Society, but at the time he could not procure himself the commission for his admission. Would like to obtain a diploma for the title of the honor he had to participate in the Society.
