At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. General Henry Knox's bill from Joseph Billings. It appears that Billings was a tailor. The bill is for various pieces of clothing including coats, waistcoats, and breeches. Also has payments due for various lengths of cloth as well as buttons, hooks, and thread. The total came to £86.3.3. Not signed, but appears to be in Joseph Billings' hand.
