At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

I Jonathn Adams Do acknowledge to have voluntarily enlisted my self as a [struck: private] Soldier to serve His Majesty King GEORGE the Second, in a Company of Foot, under the Command of Capt John Terry of Fulton raised in the Expedition now preparing for the Reduction of CANADA. att ye same time [inserted: illegible] Thirty fore Pound, old Enlist.n money

THESE are to Certify, That Jonathan Adams Aged forty Nine Years, Born at Chelmsford came before Me, one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said County, and acknowledged to have voluntarily enlisted himself to serve His Majesty King GEORGE the Second, in the abovesaid Service: He also acknowledged he had heard the seventh and tenth Articles of War read unto him against Mutiny and Dessertion, and took the Oath of Fidelity, mentioned in the Twenty-first Article of War, and at the same Time receiv'd Thirty Pounds old [illegible] enlisting Money.
