At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

House inquiry, led, by Mr. [Thomas] FitzSimons concerning the failure of an expedition under General Arthur St. Clair. Gives a report on what happened that day and all of the circumstances that led to the failure of the expedition. Noted as an extract from the [House] journal and signed in print by John Beckley, clerk with extensive handwritten annotations (many referencing a revised report) by Henry Knox.
