At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Pleasanton submits his monthly report, and relates that he is in Washington, D.C. by direction of the Secretary of War. One bust engraving of Pleasanton included as collateral.

John Buchanan Floyd served as United States Secretary of War 6 March 1857- 29 December 1860, and Joseph Holt was Secretary of War 18 January- 4 March 1861. Pleasanton was appoint Brigadier General of Volunteers in July 1862.
