Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains the first magazine printing of the United States Constitution on p. 276-284. Also contains an essay by Benjamin Franklin on "Information for those who would wish to remove to America. Also features political sketches, an address to "friends of American Manufacturers," reflections encouraging commerce, articles on agriculture, political culture, and various prose and poetry. Provenance from the library of Henry Knox, although without ownership marks.
