Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Union Major General Peck writes that he has received Lossing's request for a map of operations about Suffolk, Virginia and discusses the scale of the map. Includes a post script stating that the House Military Committee will pass a joint resolution of thanks to the "Army of Suffolk." Written on stationary of Department of the East, Headquarters Maj. Gen. Peck, No. 37 Bleecker Street.

Peck served a key role in defending Suffolk against the Confederate forces. Lossing was an editor and historical author.
