At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In Latin and French, witnessed by numerous people. Signed by Jefferson (serving then as Secretary of State). Also signed by Members of Congress Jeremiah Wadsworth, Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., NYS Supreme Court Justice Richard Morris, Vice Consul of France Antoine R.C.M. DelaForest [sic?] and wife (?), with John and Susanna Kean, Philip Livingston, John Trumbull. A. Frances de Crevecoeur was daughter to the famous author.
