Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recruitment broadside with woodcut of American eagle on top of shield. The eagle holds a banner that says "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved!" Says there is a meeting at the church in Laona. Discussion to be on raising volunteers for the defense of the country.
Certificate of Authenticity in the collateral file estimated the date as 1862, which was used to date this record. Broadside is cut unevenly and has some damge at the top.
