Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John Sherman, brother of William Tecumseh Sherman, was a United States Representative from Ohio 1855-1860, Senator 1861-1878 and 1881-1898, United States Secretary of the Treasury 1877-1881, and Secretary of State 1897-1898.
