Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports to his brother, discussing possible troop movements. Reports a "rumour" the Rebels are evacuating Vicksburg. Writes that all their friends are doing well, and notes that his brother may call "the Colt after Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, the last name will do very well." Includes a short note which was written 28 April.

The Seige of Vicksburg took place May-July 1863, resulting in a Confederate surrender.
