Reynolds, a West Point graduate, served with the regular army until 1857 when he resigned his commission. During the Civil War, Reynolds commanded a volunteer regiment and eventually obtained the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers. After the war Reynolds decided to pursue a military career and rejoined the regular army. However, his volunteer rank did not carry over into the regular army. Reynolds accepted a commission as a Colonel and was stationed in Texas. The only letter in the collection (#16) describes various improvements to the city of San Antonio.
