Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sergeant Jacob Sanders signs as a witness. Includes the names of soldiers in Company F, led by Captain George England. Each soldier signs with an "x" between the first and last name. Table printed on verso outlines the Secretary of War's recommended allowace of clothing to each soldier per year.

England enlisted in the Union Army on 12 September 1861 at Utica, NY as a 1st Lieutenant. On 15 October 1861 he was commissioned into "D" Co. NY 2nd Heavy Artillery He was promoted to captain and commissioned into "F" Co. US CT 26th Infantry on 17 February 1864. He was mustered out on 28 August 1865.
