Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written as Secretary of the Council of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1650-1686) to the leader of the Massachusetts Milita in Dorchester (the Major of Suffolk) a few days after the 18 April 1676 attack on Sudbury during King Philip's War.
