Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Taken by Gutekunst. Accompanying text panel reads: "Scenes from the battlefield at Gettysburg, PA. General Meade's Head-quarters, on the Baltimore Turnpike, in the centre of our lines, during the last two days of the battle, according to statement of Adjutant General Thomas, U.S.A." Actually a photograph of Meade's Headquarters at the widow Pfeffer House used after the battle. A civilian man stands near the fence gate.
