Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a three story brick buliding. Many people are clustered outside the entrance and many boxes are stacked along its side. Inscription on verso: "Gettysburg Office of Sanitary Commission." Additional inscription on verso: "Ordway Gardner Coll" "not this" "1st day." Numeric notations on verso: "238" and "VII."
