Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Illinois Infantry July 22d 1861, Promoted Nov. 25th 1861 to Lieut. Col. and Dec 24 1861 by the unanymous vote of the Officers of the Regt made Colonel." "He was killed Dec 31st 1862 at the Battle of 'Stone River' near Murfreesboro Tenn while commanding the 3d Brigade in the 3d Div of thie 20th Army Corps of the Dept of the Cumberlands."
