Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Western Union telegram sent from Edison in Fort Meyers, Florida, to McMillan with the following information, "Farm and Fireside 250 Park Ave New York NY." Edison ends with, "Will see you anytime - T A Edison."

McMillan was an agrarian who founded the Farm Chemurgic Council with Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Nobel Prize physicist Robert Milliken, to expand the market for agricultural products.
