Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing five days after taking over as Commander in Chief writing to Johnson as Supterintendent of Indian Affairs. In part: "... I have received a letter form the Council of Virginia complaining of the Depredations of the Northern Indians on the Frontiers of that Province..., I enclose you a copy of the said letter; begging the favor of you to return me an answer thereto...."
