Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nine large plate albumen prints of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. Secret Service head Colonel Lafayette C. Baker selected Gardner to take the photographs of the conspirators while in they were in custody, awaiting trial aboard the U.S.S. Montauk and the U.S.S. Saugus. Decimalized, GLC07738.01-.09
