Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "West-Point and its Fortifications in 1780" dated 1780. Depicts a landscape view of the Hudson Highlands and West Point Military Academy. In the forefront of the engraving, two men look across the Hudson River at the Military Academy. Drawn and engraved by J.
