Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Maison de Johnson dans le pays des Mohawks" circa 1861-1877. The title translates to "Johnson's House in Mohawk Country." Depicts a distant view of Sir William Johnson's House in the Mohawk Valley, New York. In the forefront of the painting, two groups of people walk across the lawn towards Sir William Johnson's house.
