Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "The Battle of the Thames-Death of Tecumseh" dated 1857. Depicts the conflict of October 5, 1813. U.S. forces led by General William Henry Harrison battle British forces and Native American warriors led by Tecumseh at Moraviantown. An American solider, astride a white horse, shoots a Native American, presumably Tecumesh. Engraved by William Wellstood after a painting by Alonzo Chappel. Original painting in possession of publishers at time of engraving.
