Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle of Camden-Death of De Kalb" dated 1857. Depicts the death of Revolutionary War hero Johann DeKalb during the Battle of Camden, August 16, 1780. DeKalb was mortally wounded after his horse was shot from under him. Engraved after the original painting by Alonzo Chappel. Painting was in possession of publisher at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
